Levi sat on the ground by the statue of the large man in the armchair. It said 'Go west young man'. Well, he'd grown up in the west. He'd promised his mom that he'd find his father, and he'd tried. He'd dragged Street, Asher, Sean, and even Irish up to New Hampshire to try and find Jeremiah James Walker the third.
Well, they'd found him, standing on his doorstep as it rained on their heads. He'd stared at Levi, then at the others, grumbled something then asked what Levi wanted from him. Levi had been stunned, he'd opened his mouth and nothing had come to him. Then Street, he smiled as he thought of her, had said, "He only wants ta meet his daddy." Jeremiah had cringed at her grammar, then looked at Levi.
He only said one thing, "I don't know what your mother told you, but I never had relations with any Indian women out there. She's obviously lied to get money out of me. Don't talk offense, but I've seen it before and they're usually whores, boy." Then he'd shut the door. Through the window, Levi watched as he laughed about it to a fierce looking woman. A boy Levi's age-who had Levi's eyes-looked at them, scowling.
"They're all miserable pricks, they are." Irish murmured. Levi hadn't understood this. He must of zoned out, because next thing he knew, Street was shaking him, asking him what they should do.
He'd made them hop several trains, steal a few horses, pick more pockets then he cared to count, all to have a door slammed in their faces? The worst part was, his father's rejection hurt Street as much as it hurt him. He'd never belonged anywhere, he realized. Not in the village because they all knew he was a half-breed, and he didn't belong in the white world because he looked like an Indian. He didn't belong anywhere in the world. Except side by side with Street.
He dragged himself out of his depression as someone called his name.

Maya looked long and hard at the boy sitting by the large statue. "Wanageeska?" She whispered. He looked different. His hair was so short now, but it looked good on him. He had the same facial features as always. It had been a long time since she'd seen him, but she'd recognize her best friend anywhere. She walked closer to him. "Wanageeska?" She said louder. Her breath caught when he looked up at her. Her face broke into a huge smile. "It's me. Kimaya." She wasn't sure if he'd remember her or not. She resisted the urge to hug him, waiting for him to say something.

Levi looked at her. "How do you know my Indian name?" He asked stupidly. Then, he recognized her. "Kimaya?" He cried, leaping to his feet effortlessly. He scooped her up in a hug. "Wow! What are you doin' here in New York?" He asked. Then he switched to Sioux, so they were both more comfortable. "How's your mother? How's Chayton, and Grandpa, and my siblings, and Napay! How's Napay?" He asked eagerly. He missed his best friend almost as much as his grandfather and step-father.

Maya grinned and hugged him back. She pulled away and stared at him. "What do you mean your Indian name? What is it they call you here?" Her smile turned into a frown. "Our camp was taken. I didn't see by whom. My mother had me leave before things got bad. I got captured, but they covered my head i did not see who it was. I escaped and i ran. I didn't want to look back." Kimaya had escaped from the intruders. She'd felt a gun on her covered head, she knew someone was behind her. She thrusted her elbow back and connected. With what she didn't know, but her capture fell and the others tried to help him. She ran and pulled the bag off of her head. She didn't look back but she did hear a gun shot and the thud of a body hitting the ground. She didn't know who got shot or why but the gun shot still haunted her in her dreams. "Wanageeska, I am so sorry." She told him, she swallowed her tears. She'd been close to his grandfather. He was a good man. She missed him terribly and wished she had gotten the chance to say goodbye before she left.

Levi grinned. "They call me Levi hear. That's what Mum named me, remember? She wanted me to have an English name so Pa would know I was his. Levi Walker." He snorted. "I'm going to stick with Levi Akecheta. James Walker wants nothing with me. Call Mum a whore..." He shook his head.
"What do you mean? Did they make y'all relocate or somethin'?" He asked, worried severely. "It's fine Maya, it's fine." He didn't like seeing the girl cry. He remembered the small Maya, always tailing after him and his friends, especially Napay. She always like Napay. "Why'd you come to New York?" He asked.
Just then, Sean, Asher, and Henri walked up. They had all formed a little group, the four of them. Street had told Asher to be wary of strangers, and he'd panicked and made them all stay with him whenever he went somewhere. "Hey, Levi! Who's this?" Asher asked politely. Levi was silently thankful that Asher had spoke first. Sean would only talk about his bird and Henri would try to sleep with her.
"Kimaya. I knew her when I was little." Levi told him, pushing Maya forward a bit.

Kimaya nodded. "That's right. It's been so long." She laughed. "Well Levi, actually i came to find you. I've only been a few other places." She shrugged as if it was nothing. She'd never gone anywhere on her own but it didn't matter now because she'd found him now. She glanced between Levi and the other three boys. She walked forward, following Levi's nudge. She swallowed and smiled politely. "Hello." She said, smiling at all three of them individualy.

Asher grinned at her, Sean nodded and smiled slightly. Henri, however, rushed forward and took her hand. "Ah! Loveliest creature I have ever seen! I am Henri, my dear, Henri! Let me hear you say it once..." He urged, kissing her palm.
Levi rolled his eyes and pushed the older boy away. "Shut up, Henri." He said. "Maya doesn't want to hear that crap." He looked at her. "You don't, right?"

Maya smiled at Henri. "Nice to meet you...Henri." She nodded at him. She looked at Levi and rolled her eyes. "Of courst not." She smiled at him, taking her hand back. She debated on whether she should tell him what her mother had told her. About how they were betrothed. She decided to wait until she got to reknow him. It had been a few years. She stepped back so she could be with Levi again. "It was nice meeting you all." She smiled at them again.

"You too." Asher said, nodding to her. "Hey, Levi, seen Street lately? I hear she's been busy, but she always makes it a point to come see me at the LH."
Levi rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, I saw her. Told her I'd be her date at the wedding, but she said she still wasn't sure if she wanted to give me a second chance. She still had that bruise on her arm and I asked if that was what was bothering her, but she said no. I guess it's because I gave you a black eye and threw Sean down that flight of stairs." He shrugged. "I just hope she doesn't show up with Mush."
"She told me she's willing to give you another chance, but not right now. Not while all the stuff with the KC's going on. And the wedding, that too." Sean said. "Well, we outta go. I have to introduce Henri to Gemma." Sean said eagerly. Asher chuckled, Henri looked excited. He obviously didn't know Gemma was a bird. "Bye." He walked away, waving goodbye to Levi and Maya. Asher and Henri followed.

Kimaya smiled at the boys as they left. Once they were gone she turned toward Levi. "Levi? I have to talk to you. Can we go somewhere?" She touched his arm. Something in Maya had stirred when he talked about this other girl. She had wanted to wait to tell him about their arranged marriage, but her heart told her not to wait, do it now. She looked Levi straight in the eye. She didn't like the fact that it was arranged, but she did like him. She always had. She had to tell him, but she wanted him to make a decision instead of doing something because he had to. She, herself, hadn't been able to take authority very well.

Levi looked at her, confused by her sudden serious. That's the way it had always been. He'd joked around and she'd been the serious one. But something in her tone scared him slightly. It was kind of like when his grandda had taken him aside and told him that his father was not Chayton, but James Walker. Something big that would change his life. "Um... Sure. Here, no one comes here much." He pulled her into a small, well lit, alley way. "So, what is it?"

Maya followed him into the alley. She took a deep breath and looked into his eyes once more. "Levi. After you left, your mother and my mother talked. And, well, they told me that we were betrothed. They wanted us together." She bit her lip. "But i want you to make that decision. I don't want you to feel like it's your responsibility." She smiled. She felt better now that she'd gotten that out. It had been three long years. Her smile slid off her face seeing Levi's expression.

Levi looked like he'd been hit over the head with a hammer. "Betrothed? As in, engaged?" He asked, his voice rising a few octaves. He rubbed his neck. "Maya, I swear if you're lyin', I send you back to Dakota in a casket!" He said quietly, trying to stop his hands from shaking. "I-I don't know, Maya. I mean, I can't even commit to a job... Let alone a realtionship?" He laugehd shakily. "I don't know if I can do it..." He told her truthfully.

Kimaya gave Levi a small smile. "I could never lie to you, Levi. I promise." She saw his hands shaking out of the corner of her eye. She grabbed one of them without realizing. "It is okay. You don't have to... Not like you have to..." Her hand started shaking slightly. She looked down and saw that she was holding Levi's hand. She let go of it quickly. Awkward.... she thought. She loked into his eyes, wanting to see if he noticed and, or, cared.

Levi tried to smile. "It was just shockin' is all. I mean, I just broke up with Street a few weeks ago. Now I find out, I'm supposed to get married? Just kinda... Well, weird..." He said, trailing off. "And I never imagined you.... I mean, you're pretty and all, I just thought that if I got betrothed, it would have been to Chayton's sister's kid. You remember that girl? The one whose family had all the animals? She was rich, but I suppose that doesn't matter now." He sighed, ran a hand through his hair. "Let's just get to know each other again, okay?"
