"God? I don't think I'd want to argue with your God." He shook his head. He smiled. "Lootah would argue with the wind if he could, just like your sister." He listened to her cheerfully. "My horse's name was Wind Woman. She could run like the wind, and she was my best friend-next to Napay, that is." he grinned. "Have you ever had a best friend? I mean, look at me, I keep goin' on and on about my family and I haven't heard a word about yours. Surely you have a family?" He asked quietly.

"God? I don't think I'd want to argue with your God."
She laughed and shook her head, "Me either, but Sophia..." She trailed off and paused, looking out as if she could back ten years ago when the sisters were closer than ever. "She would." Hope said, looking over at Levi.
"Lootah would argue with the wind if he could, just like your sister."
Hope smiled, "He sounds like a firecracker, just like Sophia."
"My horse's name was Wind Woman. She could run like the wind, and she was my best friend-next to Napay, that is."
She grinned as she listened to him talk about his horse. "She sounds great, I'm sure you miss her."
"Have you ever had a best friend? I mean, look at me, I keep goin' on and on about my family and I haven't heard a word about yours. Surely you have a family?"
"I had one really good friend back in Hungary, but when we moved there really wasn't a way for us to communicate. Since moving to New York, I haven't had a best friend." She thought about how long she had been in New York and shook her head slightly, "Wow, and I've been here for half my life. I'm pretty pathetic, aren't I?" She asked, playfully.
Hope sighed, "No..I don't have a family." She said quietly. "Not a flesh and blood family, though. I guess the newsies are my family, but gosh, sometimes it doesn't feel like it. I've been on my own for the past eight years." She shrugged nonchalantly.

Levi thought on this. "I'll be your best friend." He said finally. "If you don't mind. I mean, we all have to stick together." He said, smiling gently. "You're not pathetic, you just have other things to do. Friends tend to rank low on the priority list when you're tryin' to survive, right?"
He nodded. "I understand what you mean. It can get a little lonely on your own, but... Look on the bright side, right?" Levi asked her, grinning. "It'll all be alright."

Hope shook her head and smiled, "Of course I don't mind." She said. Having a best friend again would be great. "They do. They really shouldn't because friends are important. Well, at least they're really important to me. But when you're trying to learn the ropes, and get used to a new lifestyle, it can be nerve wracking. Now that I'm used to everything, I've decided its time to reset my priorities."
"I understand what you mean. It can get a little lonely on your own, but... Look on the bright side, right?"
She looked over at Levi, smiling. "Exactly."

Levi sighed. "I'm glad you don't mind, I'd probably fall out the tree if you had said no." he chuckled. "Friends are important to me too... At least I hope so. I'm afraid that one morning I'll wake up and all I can think of is stealin' and gamblin' and drinkin'. I'd probably feel like I failed in keepin' my promise to my grandfather." Levi grinned. "Exactly, to be exact." he said, being silly.

"I'm glad you don't mind, I'd probably fall out the tree if you had said no."
Hope laughed and glanced down at the ground, "That wouldn't have been good, we're not that far off the ground, but you'd probably break something at least. I'm glad you didn't fall out of the tree." She said, smiling.
"Friends are important to me too... At least I hope so. I'm afraid that one morning I'll wake up and all I can think of is stealin' and gamblin' and drinkin'. I'd probably feel like I failed in keepin' my promise to my grandfather."
She nodded, she had felt like that many times before, especially when she was first starting out as a newsie. Many days she wished she could just drink her sorrows away, or try to gamble with her money. She had the occasional drink, nothing more to get her drunk so she would do something she would regret later.
"What did you promise your grandfather?" She asked, thinking it was nice that Levi had a promise he was keeping.

Levi grinned. "Knowin' my luck I'd break my tailbone or something and I'd half to lay on my stomach all the time. At least if you break an arm..." He stopped talking and became embarrassed. "Never mind..."
Levi sobered and looked her in the eye. "I promised my grandfather that I would never let the Sioux language die inside me. And that I would never forget my mother, 'Hemaca cece kici ki mahpiya na kici iye'." He quoted. "I cry for the sky and for her. Grandfather never told me to stop mourning. Even though I was only six I still remember her well. Especially her eyes, they were compassionate and wise and wonderful." He shook his head sadly.
