Full Name: Edwin Wallace Seagraves
Newsie name: Malleus
Name origin: When he first came to the lodging house, one of his only posessions was a very old, battered copy of the book Malleus Maleficarum (a medieval book about how to find and kill witches). It was made before titles were really put on the outside of books so at some point one of his ancestors had scratched the title into the back cover of the book. He didn't really talk much at the time and he never introduced himself to the other newsies so when they saw the book they thought that he had scratched his name into it for identification purposes. He'd never really been a huge fan of his name so when they started calling him "Malleus" he just kind of went with it and to this day he just lets that majority of people think that his name really is Mallus Maleficarum the only people he has told otherwise for matters of trust are the other leaders who are sworn to secrecy over the matter.
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Currently Living: Midtown, New York
History: Born in Philadelphia to a factory worker father and french immigrant mother, Mallius's life started off relatively well. He and his parents were not rich (or even middle class) by any means and his father had a tendency to drink a bit too much at times but he was never violent to his wife or son and they were happy for the most part. However, when he was six years old, his mother had a miscarriage and the blood flow was so heavy that she died before the doctor showed up. ((OOC: It was actually an ectopic pregnancy (one that occurs outside of the uterus) and though it couldn't be diagnosed in 1899, it would have been a death sentence back then)) After his mother's death, his father's drinking problem got out of control and over the years he began to grow abusive to his son. By the time he was nine, he had grown tired of black eyes and broken ribs and he ran away. He hopped the nearest train to New York, hoping that it would be a big enough city that his father would never find him if he ever tried to come looking.
The only thing other than a few sets of clothes (complete with numerous small bloodstains from the beatings that he had recieved from his father) and a meager sum of money and a battered old photo of his family from happier days was a copy of Malleus Maleficarum that had been a family heirloom on his mother's side. That book eventually gave him both his nickname (as explained above) and his reputation. Books being relatively rare in the lodging house, people eventually got curious and skimmed through the book (consistantly skipping the title page which would have showed them their mistake in regards to his name). As the content of the book is less than savory (it mostly depicts torture and the occult.) it didn't take long for them to become wary of him and when they saw the bloodstains on his shirts they assumed the worst about him. Overall, he's a very pleasent person so the other newsies began to socialize with him despite the rumors that were going around about his past but they always made sure not to make him angry.
Over the next few years, kids moved in and out of the Midtown lodging house and the rumors about him became less known but the feeling of distanced respect remained and he became more and more able to hold up his reputation (both as a fighter and a mediator) and when the old leader moved on to a more adult job, he was the named as the successor. He has held the poition for two years now and by all means he is a benevolant dictator (I mean leader ) he's often very rigid when it comes to the rules and he has a reputation for giving rather harsh punishments but he does genuinely care about the welfare of his borough members and they generally agree that his rules are neither unreasonable nor numerous. He deals well with the other boroughs but he can fly off the handle a bit if he feels that some injuustice is being perpetrated upon his borough or himself.
Hair Color: Brown
Hair Style: A bit longer than some but still pretty short, usually messy
Eye Color: Blue
Skin Color: caucasian, not particularly tan or particularly pale
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 160 lb
Clothing Style: just like most newsies, his clothes are old, worn and usually dirty. He tries to keep them looking decent but, to be honest, he's got more important things to do than laundry.
Items owned: a copy of Malleus Maleficarum
Troubles: for the most part just the everyday troubles of being a leader (managing conflicts within the borough, dealing with other boroughs etc.)
Fears: just general worries about the welfare of his Borough members (along with a certain irrational reservation about porcelein dolls (their eyes bother him))
Siblings: None
Parents: Charles and Aurore Seagraves
