The only night they didn’t work was Sunday night when they all went out on the town (with the exception of Martha who stayed behind with Betsy) One night, however, one of the more difficult regulars showed up and when Martha denied him, he forced himself on her, she fought back and he hit her with a lamp. In his rush to leave the scene, he left the door open and Betsy wandered out the door when her mother wouldn’t wake up. She walked around aimlessly for awhile, chasing butterflies and puppies and following people until she eventually made her way to the Bronx lodging house which is where her story picks up.
