Chase shot Asher a look. "Ya can sing?" He laughed, teasing him. He picked up his shirt. He stood up and stretched his back. He hurried to catch up with Street. He walked right next to her, keeping pace all the way. "I think i'll watch the master at work." He said winking at both of them. They stopped outside of a building and Chase followed Street in, followed by Asher.

Asher looked at him like he was crazy. "Of course I can sing. My good looks are only a ploy." He half-smiled, then ran after them after pulling his pants on hurriedly. Street walked with a bounce in her step. Asher's heart nearly stopped when Chase winked at him.
Street hummed as she led them into a shadowy building. It was smoky and men filled the place with whispered conversations. "Craps or poker taday Street?" An older man asked.
"Craps, o'course." She said rubbing her hands. The man led her into another room, this one filled with newsies, young miners, telegram boys, and other children workers. Street joined a circle and pulled out a pouch filled with money. "Gotta pay yer own way, boys." She told Chase and Asher. Asher sighed and pulled out his wallet, also filled with money. His paychecks for the last three months. Street laid a dollar on the pot, Asher followed her, as did three other boys. They all looked at Chase expectantly.

Chase looked at them all back. He'd never been in a room with this many people before. He didn't even have it in him to tell them to quit staring. "Oh no. I'm just watchin' guys." He leaned against the wall with his hands behind his back. "Please go on." He smiled slightly at them.

Street looked at him. "Sure? I can spot ya some if ya want ta play..." She said. But then she turned to the others, picked up the dice and rolled. "Oh! Snake eyes! I win." She scooped the money up. Everyone laid down money again. Street picked up the dice again, she lost.
More money into the pot, Asher picked up the dice, kissed his fist and said, "Help me Mr. Shakespeare." And he rolled. He won, scooping up all the money. He rolled again, and won again. Then he lost. The three other boys went, loss, win, loss, loss. Then it was Street's turn again.
"Here Chase, blow on the dice. For good luck." Once he did, she threw them against the wall and clapped her hands. "I win." She scooped the money up. It continued like this, with her and Asher cleaning house, until the other boys were out of money and told Street they could not sing. Street pocketed her earnings and Asher shoved a fistful on Chase.

Chase shook his head at Street's offer. SHe turned and played. He laughed and smiled at certain things. When it was her turn again she turned to him and told him to blow on the dice. He did and she won. She laughed. He loved her laugh. He smiled at her. When it was all over, Street and Asher turned to him. "Woah woah. What are ya doin'?" He said to Asher when he got money shoved at him. He raised his hands. "I don't want ya money Asher. It's yers."

Asher shook his head. "Just... Just take it Chase." He said, pleading slightly. He flushed and looked away. Street smiled knowingly, approving of the whole thing. She thought the two blonde boys went together perfectly.

Chase looked at Asher's pleading gaze before he turned away. "Fine." He said. He took a few dollars and shoved the rest back at Asher. "The rest is yers." He turned before Asher could protest and followed Street out of the building.
Once outside, he took a deep breath of fresh air. He couldn't stand cigarette smoke. He drank like a fish but he had never touched a cigarette in his life.

Street hummed. "Now that we have money, I say we go shoppin'." She surveyed the stores across the street and suddenly ran to one with a heavily pregnant woman sweeping the front step. "Scarlett!" She called, hugging her gently. "Where's Mercury? I have money, I can my debts now..." She told her excitedly. Asher waved to Scarlett shyly and little Eliot peeking from behind her skirts.
"They've already been paid, dear. Yes, Ophelia came in this morning and paid of all your debts, Mush's, Levi's, Asher's, everybodys." Scarlett said, going into the store, Street followed and hugged her oldest brother quickly before looking at the merchandise.
"Then that means more for me ta spend taday." Street let her fingers slid over a petticoat. "Scarlett, you still have them dresses in the back room? The ones ya can't sell?" Scarlett said she did. "That's good. See... There's a masquerade goin' on and I heard ya all were supplyin' costumes and masks. I need a dress and such."
"What color dear? I can make you one real quick. I ordered a bunch from a magazine and they just have to be fitted." Scarlett said in her draw, showing Street a booklet of ball gowns.
"Hmm. Black. Can I get Levi a white tux? So we match."
"Yeah, I need a black and white tux too. 'Cause I'm performing with an Irish band from Harlem, you see..." Asher pointed out. "What about you Chase?"

Chase looked around at the tiny shop. Then his head whipped around to Asher again. "Oh- uh i don't think i'm goin'. But we'll see." He said quickly, seeing the disappointment on Asher's face. He looked at Street and wondered why she was going with Levi. He shrugged it off and then got an idea. He was going to the masquerade but he wasn't gonna tell anyone. He'd show up and no one would know who he was. They'd all have masks on anyways. "Nah, i doubt i'll go. I'm not really a dancer sorry."

Asher was crestfallen. Perfect oppurtunity for romance; music, dancing, darkness... He shrugged it off and turned to Street. He pointed out a dress to her. "How about this one?" He asked. Street bit her lip, but then nodded. She showed it to Scarlett.
"Can I get it in black, Scarlett?" She asked, Scarlett said she thought so.

Chase let his mind wander. He needed a suit or at least the jacket to show up to this ball. He wondered if Scarlett would say anything if he got one here. He kept seeing Asher's crestfallen face in his mind. He pushed it to the back of his mind and tried to focus. "Asher ya might want to get Brooke in here. I hoid she wanted ta go. Might wanta tell Sean bout that." He smirked.

Street snorted. "Sean's only going to give Irish moral support. Irish is announcin' his engagement. 'Least, that's what Sean told me. I expect that Sean will get drunk-again-and kiss Brooke. If he can recognize her. I don't think Levi will recognize me. I'll be like a lady. Wonder what Ophelia's wearin'..." Then suddenly, she brightened, holding up a tux and mask Scarlett had laid down. "Look, Asher! This'll look so cute on ya! 'Specially with the music notes..."
"Sure you are not going, young man? Name's Mercury Lexeme." Mercury said quietly to Chase from behind the counter. "I think you'll break quite a few hearts if you go."
"It's yer birthday, ain't it Asher? The ball I mean, it's on yer birthday. Ya'll be fifteen!" Street said.

Chase looked over at Mercutio and smirked. The look in his eye said that he was going. Chase winked at him and put a finger to his lips. He quickly put it down and looked back at Asher. "Nice mask. He said to Asher. Then he stopped, seeing Street's dress. "Wow." He whispered. "Ya'd look mighty nice in that Street." He smiled at her.
