Street huffed at him. "If I haven't died yet, it ain't gonna happen. I do plan ta see 1900." She told him. She did as she was told and ate more of the food. "What are ya grinnin' about?" She asked him. "Do I have somethin' on my face?" She asked him. "Besides my freckles?" She wiggled her nose, which was covered in soft brown freckles. "Ya know, Ophelia has freckles. But I doubt ya'll ever see them. Unless ya ask her ta marry ya." Street winked. "Ya bring out the devil in me."

He chuckled. "Nah nothing besides the usual freckles. Just thinkin' of new ways ta torture ya." He laughed again. He thought about Ophelia. He did want to marry her, but now wasn't the right time. He didn't know why, he just had a gut feeling that told him to wait. He watched her eat. "Relax, will ya. It'll happen just not right now." Then it hit him. He didn love her. Not the way he loved Street or how he'd loved Brooke, but something else.

Street rolled her eyes. "Great, more torture." She looked thoughtful. "Well, have ya come up with somethin' yet?" She asked. She looked at him. "I understand that, somewhat. But... I don't know matters of the heart. I've never really been in love, remember?" She asked, tapping her head lightly.

He smiled at her and rolled his eyes. "Yeah i remember. But how am i gonna do this. I have nothing to give to her. I don't have a ring, or money, or a job." He shook his head. "I can't support her." Street had finished eating and Mush paid the bill. SHe hadn't said anything until they got outside. It was windy and her hair blew around her face. Shit he thought. "Let's get inside. Uh- somewhere." He was blabbering like an idiot, but he had to get Street inside.

Street looked at him like he was crazy. "I can get money. Ophelia's got tons of money. I guess our grandmamma sends it to her in the heap load. Fifty dollars a week if she wants. I'll ask her for some, buy some food with it and give the rest ta ya. Then ya can do whatever ya need ta." She shrugged. "Besides, Ophelia doesn't need supportin'. She told me that when she turns eighteen, she gets all this money from out parents will. She says only out brother Mercutio claimed some a couple years ago, and she doesn't know where he is, and Tybalt's disappeared. Or, if she gets married. Then she'll get the rest of the money... Until I turn eighteen. Which is highly unlikely since the conditions I live under aren't that great." She shrugged. "Ya don't have ta worry about money, Mush."

Mush started shaking his head even before Street was finish with her first sentence. "I'm not taking ya're money. If ya want some ta eat, go for it but i'm doin' this on me own. Don't they all?" It reassured him slightly that his unsupportivness wouldn't matter but he was going to get a ring if it killed him. And he was going to do it without using Ophelia's or her family's money. They weren't married yet. That money belonged to the family.

Street shrugged. "It's up ta ya. If it was me and my guy, I'd take the money. Sure make things a lot easier. It's romantic of ya though... Goin' through all this trouble." She told him. Street sighed. "I'll need the money. Since I can't do nothin' and all. Do ya think Levi would help me out? He's a pickpocket and all." She suggested.

"That," Mush said pointedly, "you'll have ta take it up with him. Now, i ain't Race but i'd bet almost anything he hasn't forgiven himself yet." He looked around. The buildings were familiar but none too inviting. He saw a somewhat sheltered alleyway. He pointed. "Come on, let's get outta the wind." He didn't like the thought of the alley with all the news about goils being taken and raped and left ta die, but he wouldn't let anything happen to his little sister. He smiled at that thought. Little sister suited her. It seemed right somehow.

Street shook her head. "Uh-huh. I don't wanna go in there. Can't we go back ta Tibby's or the Lodgin' House?" She asked. "It's durin' visitin' hours, so we won't get in trouble. 'Sides, Kloppman knows me." She shrugged. "Plus, it ain't a good idea with all the attacks. If he's got a knife, it's no good even if we are together." She shrugged. "Plus, don't want nothin' ta happen ta my big brother..." She sang softly, trying to skip ahead, but it hurt her to much so she settled for just walking quicker.

Mush laughed. "Yeah we can go to da House. Ya're probably right. Do ya know who's doin' it? If i ever catch him i'll strangle him with my bare hands." He smiled at her only half joking. He laughed more when she walked faster ahead. If only took him a few long strides to catch up with her. She wasn't a very fast walker even when she wasn't injured. He walked with her the whole way to the Manhattan Lodging House, keeping pace with her every step of the way. He smiled at her 'big brother' comment.

Street nodded. "I'm always right." She told him innocently. "If I knew, ya'd know. Everybody'd know. I'd ask someone who got attacked..." She shrugged and took his arm, "C'mon, hurry up. I can see the Lodgin' House." She pulled him into the building and into the common room. "Ah, I love the smell of stinky boys in the mornin'." She joked, waving a hand in front of her face.

Mush shook his head as they walked into the Lodging House. "Heya Kloppman. Is it okay for Street to stay here a while?" He asked the old man behind the desk. He was like the Newsies father. He was nice to them and he understood them. Kloppman nodded. "Thanks. Come on." Mush said pulling Street up the stairs. "It's warmer up here."

Street followed him. "It is warmer." She said, pushing hair from her face. "It feels nice up here. Like... home. Maybe it's 'cause I'm with ya, Mush. It's already rubbin' off on me." She smiled at him and sat in a comfy chair by the roaring fire. "So cozy... Not like the river with its breezes and water..." She slurred, her eyes becoming heavy.

He smiled. He was glad she liked it here. He towed her over to the bed so she could lay down. She looked pretty tired. After she was taken care of, Mush sat down beside the bed and stretched. He yawned. Great, he thought now sleep is contagious. He felt his eye lids getting heavier. He figured he'd close them for a minute or two. Next thing he knew Kid Blink was shaking him awake. "Mush, what's Street doin' here?"
Mush rubbed his eyes from sleep. He wondered how long he'd been out. He looked at Street, she was still asleep. He stood up slowly. Sleeping in a sitting position on the hard floor wasn't the most comfortable but at least Street was safe. "I took her for a bite ta eat at Tibby's then we came here to get outta the wind. SHe was tired so i let her sleep on me bed. Why?"
Blink shrugged and dropped the subject. He walked away quickly. Mush turned around and saw Street stir.

Street yawned and rubbed her eyes a bit, suddenly looking like a large five year old. She stretched, but skipped over that part because of her stomach. She blinked a couple times and turned her head to look at Mush. "What's goin' on? I was hearin' voices..." She murmured, stifling another yawn. "Ya didn't get in trouble, did ya Mush?" She asked quietly. "I'm sorry if ya did." She fiddle with her shirt as she sat up.
