Sean O'Reilly sat on the bench by the train tracks. He was waiting for the train that would take him to New Jersey, where he was filling in for a injured miner. Beside him, Gemma sat in her small metal cage, hopping and tweeting cheerfully. Sean smiled, and wiped his forehead. He's been working so much lately that he didn't have much time to stay clean. Black dust from the coal came off on his sleeve. He sighed, his mother would be made that his clothes were always dirty from the mines-even though they were usually black.
Leaning against the bench was his haversack, it carried his pickaxe, lantern, and most importantly, his lunch. On the bench by Gemma sat his miners cap, with its little lantern on the front of it. He yawned, not a good sign. Inside, he smelled coffee and he desired to get some, but he didn't want to leave Gemma by herself. Not only did he love her, but she was essential to the miner's survival in the mine. Though it pained him to think it-if Gemma died, he knew it was time to get out of there. The canaries' gave their lives to protect the miners'.
"Hey there, Gemma, ye want some seed?" He asked, poking a sunflower seed into her cage. She ate it cheerfully. "That's me goil." He cooed at her, she nibbled on his finger affectionately.

Brooke sat on the train going back to New York. She had liked the sunny warmness of the West coast, but it wasn't home. So she was headed back to New York. Back to her friends and her brother. She smiled at that thought. Finally, the train stopped. She waited in the line to get out. When she did she looked around at the sorry saps who were leaving. Didn't they know what they were missing? She shook her head. Then, she saw a cute boy about 16 with beautiful blonde hair and gorgeous eyes. He reminded her of Irish. She walked up to him he had a cute little canary with him. "Hiya. I'm Brooke. And ya are?" She smiled and held out her hand.

Sean looked up, he smiled and shook her hand. "'Ello, Oi'm Sean O'Reilly. Nice to meet ye, Brooke. This here's Gemma, me canary. Well, she's technically not mine, she's the mine owner's, but he lets me take care of her. Can't have a sick canary in the mine, of course." Sean nodded. "Hey, ye don't happen to be Brooklyn, as in Broadway's sister? He's a good boy, he's always hangin' with me and Levi and Tyler, of course."

Brooke smiled. "Yep that's meh. May I?" She pointed to the seat next to him. She sat down. "Gemma's real pretty. Your Irish's what cousin? He's a good boy. So ya know Asher, huh?" She liked talking to him. Then, she remembered he was talking about the mines. "Ya say yous goin' to a mine? There ain't no mines in New York. Ya ain't leavin' are ya?" Brooke had just met him, and now he was leavin'. Just her luck. Lose a guy, find one, and he leaves ya. Brooke looked at Gemma, avoiding eye contace with him.

Sean nodded. "Yep, Oi'm Irish's cousin. Sometimes they call me Irish the second." He shrugged. "Oi prefer Sean though," He smiled, his white teeth glistening against his coal dust covered skin. "Oi know Asher, me and Levi go around with him alot, Mush too. Though Oi suppose ye'd know that, ye dated him right?" Sean asked uncertainly. "Oi don't know if ye know, but he's goin' with Street's older sister Ophelia now. Sorry," He patted her hand comfortingly. "Yep, Oi'm a miner. Oi'm headin' over to New Jersey to mine couple of hours on a train over and back. Work starts in a good three hours, Oi have to get up so early." He yawned. "Poor Gemma doesn't like it either," Sure enough, the bird had her head ducked under her pretty yellow wing. "Oi come back every day-unless they send me to Pennsylvania or upstate, then Oi have to stay over." He nodded.

Brooke smiled sadly. "Yeah, I know. We broke up before I moved West. We're still friends and we talk still though." She smiled, happily this time, when he patted her leg. "Ya always come back though, right?" Brooke looked down, she knew she was being obvious. She kind of realized he did, seeing as though he said he did. But she was just clarifying. It was strange, him being Irish's cousin. He looked so much like him.

Sean nodded. "Yeah, Oi always come back. Oi have to, me mam waits for me, as does me da. See, me da can't work 'cause he got hurt and me mam's pregnent. Oi'm finally gonna have a younger brother or sister. Plus, Oi want to come back. It's me home." He smiled. "Ain't that right, Gemma?" The bird chirped and he passed her another seed. She gobbled it up cheerfully, chirping again.

Brooke smiled. "Well, you certainly have a way with birds." He looked at his eyes, they were a pretty mixture of green and blue. She fell in love with them from the begining. She smiled bigger. It was good he came back. She had only just met him but didn't know what she would do without him. Her happines showed in her eyes. She had completely forgotten where she was and that there were other people around. She only saw Sean.

Sean chuckled. "Instead of a way with words?" He asked her, teasing. He looked into her eyes too... A lot of girls had brown eyes, but none had her eyes. Chocolate brown, warm. He was shocked to find he was leaning in, he jerked back suddenly. He blushed and was grateful the coal dust wouldn't reveal anything. "Yeah, I suppose I do." He said finally, petting Gemma gently.

Brooke giggled. "Yeah that too." She blushed. She leaned in for a kiss as did he. But at the last minute, he pulled away and stroked Gemma. Brooke looked away, embarassed. "So, um, when does your train come?" She asked trying to cover her embarassment. She hoped it wasn't soon. She liked talking to him. And she didn't want to have to stop anytime soon.

Sean laughed nervously. "Hehe, me trains comes in about an hour. Oi was supposed to meet so others here, so... Oi came early. Paid off nicely, huh?" He asked. "Why did ye come back, anyways?" He asked her softly, petting Gemma gently. He smoothed some ruffle feathers down and handed her another seed.

Brooke smiled slightly. She shrugged. "I missed meh boys. Uh- my brother and me friends that is." She added hastily laughing uncomfortably. She was glad he'd come early. It was nice to see a friendly face when you got off a train. Friendly and handsome, she thought. She smiled at him as he pet Gemma. "Who alls going to the mines?" She shuddered mentally. She never would understand mines. THey were cold dark and uninviting. How anyone would go into them was a mystery to her.

Sean shrugged. "Well, there was a mine collapse a few days back and a bunch of lads got killed, so me and some other boys are fillin' in for them. About five of us from the city, five from upstate, five from Pennsylvania, and the other ten or so are transferrin' from other Jersey mines." He told her. "It's nice that a lad has a sister like ye." He smiled.

Brooke stared at Sean as he was saying this. The look in her eyes became more and more terrified. "Oh my god. The mine collasped? And you're going in there?" She cleared her throat and calmed herself before she got hysterical. She had a feeling that Sean wouldn't do anything stupid and get himself in trouble. She just couldn't believe that someone would go into a collasped mine just for some stupid coal. She smiled and blushed when he said "It's nice that a lad has a sister like ye." She loved his smile. It was amazing. It was one of those smile that people say could light up a room.

Sean looked shocked by her reaction. "Well, yeah. Oi have to. Oi don't go, Oi don't get paid. Besides, mind collapses happen almost every day. Oit's very rare for them to kill anybody though... Don't worry, Oi'm young. Me senses are sharp. Plus, Oi have Gemma. She's a special bird. She can sense when we're running out of oxygen and when somethin's gonna collapse. Saved me life o'couple o'times, she has." He said. He smiled again, stroking Gemma gently.
